In the ordinary

This week, we prepare to hear the readings of the tax collector and the Pharisee.  There is a clear cut image that can be observed in these two men.  One is an arrogant and pompous man who believes himself above everyone else because he follows things as they should be.  He trusts in his own routine for salvation,  the other, is a man often looked down upon by everyone who has ever had to pay taxes.  Jesus speaks to us of the difference between approaching God in honest humilty and arrogant assumption.  This difference is clear and easy to understand.  Something else, though that must be considered is how the Pharisee has become complacent in his routine.  He believes that God is to be found in the black and white schedule.  This is good because he is able to have a nice and tidy schedule and checklist of things that must be done to attain salvation.  The other man, however, is open to the possibility that in the messiness of his ordinary life, God is acting.  Indeed that is a deeper truth in these readings.  Very often, we can miss God's presence in our lives because we are so busy trying to live up to the routine that we have set up for ourselves.  We believe that if we live out these routines we will be good to go.  The tax collector reminds us that sometimes, God comes to us in the ordinariness of life.  In the simplicity of who we are, in the bread and wine, God becomes present, and we are forever transformed.  May we open our hearts.
